History

The Williams family and Yungaburra, have in excess of 100 years association, when Henry Sydney Williams (1st generation), acquired property in Yungaburra in 1896.

Williams Lodge, the property, was subdivided in 1911 and the first part of the house was constructed in December of that year, which today is the current guest lounge.

The property was the major household of the Williams family in Yungaburra, where the family owned 31 properties, including the Lake Eacham Hotel.

After the Lake Eacham Hotel, the Williams family house was the social hub of Yungaburra in the war years. This led to the Australian and American Defence Forces building the “Dance Floor” when there were 120,000 troops stationed on the Tableland during World War II, in appreciation for hospitality shown by the family.

The first Williams member to occupy the house was Ned Williams (2nd generation), the grandfather of the current owner, who’s father Sir Sydney Williams and brother Sir Edward were born in the house.

“Our home was always full of joy and happiness, until 1929 when Dad died at 40 years of age. Then Mother died only six months later at the age of 36 years of age”. Sir Sydney "Syd" Williams 1920-2003.

“For the record, we were a family of four and living at our home in Yungaburra. Fred and Erin, our uncle and aunt, brother and sister respectively of Dad and Mum, came out with their family of five and we all grew up together. Our home was about 100 yards from the Lake Eacham Hotel, the rallying point for the family.” Sir Edward "Ned" Williams 1921-1999.

“The Fred Williams house (formerly Ned’s before he died), was up near the Post Office in Yungaburra and boasted a grand piano, and an upright (for the girls). Many lonely soldiers – American and Australian – forgot their troubles at the many parties held there during the war.” Rene Williams (aunt to Syd and Ned) 1895-1979.

“Growing up with 6 brothers and 2 sisters and such a large extended family, I felt so lucky. Our home (Williams Lodge), was always full of love, laughter and music. How mother (Erin) coped I’ll never know." Marcia Williams (cousin to Syd and Ned) b. 1925.

The Williams family have recently restored and expanded on the original establishment, to provide “Williams Lodge”, Yungaburra.
